Our headquarters is located in Alexandria, Virginia. Our mission is to drive U.S. innovation, entrepreneurship, and global competitiveness. We provide inventors, entrepreneurs, and small businesses with free resources on how to protect their intellectual property (IP). We work closely with IP practitioners and services, startups, and job-growth accelerators.

Visitor information

The campus is centered in the Madison Building. Most public events at the USPTO are held here, on both the main and concourse levels. The Madison Building is home to the Henry Baker Public Search Facility, the Clara Barton Auditorium, a cafeteria, and the National Inventors Hall of Fame and Museum.

A map (braille accessible) of the Madison Building and campus layout can be found immediately after entering the Madison Building from either of the two main entrances on Dulany Street or Eisenhower Avenue. If you require assistance or directions, we recommend that you proceed to any of the security desks located at either side of the building's atrium. USPTO Alexandria, VA campus. King St. is the map's northern border and Eisenhower Ave. the southern border. The campus is comprised of 7 buildings and 2 parking garages. Eisenhower Ave. Metro Station is to the west and King St. Station to the north.

Building access instructions

Access to non-public USPTO facilities is granted to visitors who are escorted by a USPTO employee and present a government-issued picture identification, such as:

State driver's license*;
Passport;
Enhanced Driver's License; or
Federal employee, military, or veteran identification card

*Please note: Starting on January 1, 2026, at any Department of Commerce (DOC) facility where visitors need to present identification for entry, state-issued identification must be REAL ID-compliant to be accepted. Alternatively, visitors can present a different form of government-issued photo identification. Additional information is available at DOC's REAL ID page.

The visitor and their sponsor can report to any guard station in the Madison East wing to be issued a visitor’s badge.

The Security Services Center is located within the Madison West wing of USPTO headquarters.
